Is Popping The Right Way To Get Rid Of Pimples?12.29.08

Ashish Jain asked:

Do you wish to get rid of pimples over the night? And you are too stressed up for your appearance? What will help you clear your acne before the morning? Neither the stress nor the medication! Though stress can aggravate pimples, if not cause it.

Popping seems the only way out. But don’t pop it anyways. This is the most undesirable trick to get rid of acne and can damage your skin. That too, to leave behind the horrible scars that will require even longer the time to treat! Plus, popping of pimples can also prolong the life of the pimples.

Popping of pimples should always be done in the presence of a surgeon. This will be a minor operation.

As for you, if you really want to pop acne to clear it fast, keep a few things in your mind.

Before you begin the process, wash your hands thoroughly. Use a sterilized needle to puncture it, slowly and very carefully. Wipe away the pus immediately. Don’t do it for fun. Do it with the purpose.

If you lose patience and pick, pinch or squeeze the pimple, you will have inflammation of skin. It will cause bacteria to spread to other parts of the face. The intended overnight solution, could lead to a fortnight’s problem. The resultant scars sometimes take more than a fortnight to heal.

There is another harmless method. Hold an ice pack on the pimple for about 2 minutes, and repeat this exercise for every 30 minutes. You will find marked reduction in swelling and inflammation. The pain too will subside.

You can solve the problem for the day by the dose of a flesh-tinted concealer. You hide it or mask it for a few hours. The day’s job is done and you can revert to your normal treatment. Wash the pimples affected area of your face with a mild cleanser. For exfoliation, gently rub the skin with a cotton pad or soft cloth.

A dab of toothpaste in the affected area has helped many to reduce redness and provide relief from irritation in the skin. Put some lemon juice of a piece of cotton and gently press it on the affected area. The pimples will surrender their aggressiveness to a great extent overnight.

These are some of the quick fix methods to get rid of the pimples overnight, or at least reduce their telling effect. The long drawn out treatment for pimples, needs to be carried out in consultation with the dermatologist.

A Toast To Resveratrol, An Amazing Grape Antioxidant07.24.08

Dr. Paul Gross asked:

One of the most well-known stories about the health benefits of eating fruit is called the French Paradox – the condition of unexpected low incidence of cardiovascular disease in French citizens who regularly eat extraordinary quantities of high-fat foods and consume red wine. These people technically should have high rates of cardiovascular disease but seem protected by the chemicals in wine.

Although we now recognize that high-fat diets are undesirable, the potential benefits of a diet rich in whole food phytochemicals are clear when combined with other healthy dietary and lifestyle practices, such as maintaining a regular exercise program.

Possibly the most publicized phytochemical in red wine is resveratrol found in the skin and seeds of red and purple grapes and dark berries like the blueberry. Having the chemical formula C14H12O3, resveratrol is chemically defined as a stilbene, viniferin or phytoalexin (a Greek-derived term meaning to “protect” (alexin) or to “ward off”).

This designation suits the function of resveratrol in the outer skin of plants as a primary fungicide and antiviral agent with potent antioxidant properties protecting against ultraviolet radiation, pests and injury. Resveratrol belongs to the general class of plant chemicals called phenolics or polyphenols, named from their composition of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms in 6-carbon rings.

Benefits of Resveratrol

By consuming blue, red, purple and black-skinned plants rich in resveratrol, humans may gain these protective benefits. Early medical research proves this to be true, as resveratrol has been shown in preliminary research on experimental animals to:

• Increase blood flow and reduce the extent of brain cell damage following stroke

• Reduce the activity of brain inflammatory mediators in a model of Alzheimer’s disease

• Reduce vascular plaque formation in rats given a high-fat diet

• Improve the rate of healing in skin wounds

• Protect against lipid oxidation in a model of pancreatitis

• Protect against cellular pathology in a model of diabetic kidney disease

• Protect against liver damage in a model of cholestasis or bile duct occlusion

• Protect against cartilage deterioration in a model of osteoarthritis

• Stimulate anti-clotting mechanisms in blood

• Suppress appetite and in turn contribute to weight control or loss

• Enhance sperm production

• Inhibit formation of cataracts

• Inhibit proliferation of the herpes simplex virus

• Prolong the lives of yeast cells, worms, fish and fruit flies, possibly through mechanisms that affect aging via slowing the rate of cell death

Anti-Cancer Effect

Resveratrol’s most compelling health effect shown in laboratory studies is its broad-spectrum anti-cancer activity. The online database of medical literature for the US National Institutes of Health, PubMed, cites nearly 500 publications over the past decade of research on resveratrol as a cancer chemopreventive nutrient.

Experimental models of breast, prostate, lung, blood, skin, brain, kidney, bladder, tongue, esophagus and colon cancer show evidence for beneficial effects of resveratrol. It appears also to sensitize cells toward cancer therapy agents, improving the benefit of these drugs. Also, when combined with other plant-derived phenolics, resveratrol’s anti-cancer actions seem to be enhanced, showing the potential benefits of antioxidant synergy from a mixed diet high in colorful fruits and vegetables rich in phytochemicals.

Resveratrol’s actions to inhibit inflammatory mediators and the growth of new blood vessels in tumors (called anti-angiogenesis), plus its ability to accelerate the rate of cancer cell death (called apoptosis, “eh-po-toe-sis”), are synergistic effects in anti-cancer activity. In other experiments, resveratrol inhibited enzymes synthesizing nitro-oxygen radicals like nitric oxide that may be involved in cancer development.

To summarize, resveratrol acts against mechanisms controlling the initiation, promotion and progression of tumor cell growth in laboratory models. It is considered one of the most promising natural anti-cancer agents.

Fortunately for us, resveratrol can be easily introduced into the diet by selecting foods like:

oRed grapes and dark grape juice

oRed wines (and even white ones, but with lower resveratrol levels)

oBlackberries, blueberries, cranberries and lingonberries (and their juices)

oPistachios

oPeanuts with skins and peanut butter

Take home message: Eat berries! Drink red wine! And be merry!

Insurance Cover For Gastric Bypass Surgery07.15.08

Donald Saunders asked:

An increasing number of people today find that their weight has achieved such a level that they either choose, or are more or less forced to choose, gastric bypass surgery as the only solution to their weight problem. However, having decided to undergo surgery, they are faced with the complex problem of just how to pay for the operation.

Gastric bypass surgery, including comparatively minor procedures such as gastric banding, is an expensive business requiring a highly paid surgical team, together with a stay in hospital and you are unlikely to come away with a bill of under $20,000 and could well be looking at closer to $30,000 or $35,000. Indeed, if complications arise, either immediately after surgery or during recovery at home, the final bill may rise considerably higher.

The first port of call for many people is their insurance provider. But will your insurance company meet the cost?

The answer depends in the first instance upon the form of insurance policy that you have and you will need to read through the terms of the policy with care to see whether surgery of this nature is specifically excluded and, if so, whether there are exceptions to any general exclusion. If your medical insurance is being provided by your employer then you will need to seek advice from your employer, as various insurance providers allow employers to specifically exclude weight loss surgery from their group policies.

This said, morbid obesity is a recognized medical condition and, more importantly, if left untreated it can become life threatening. Accordingly many insurance providers will cover the cost of gastric bypass surgery provided they are satisfied that surgery is a medical necessity.

So, if your insurance policy does not specifically exclude weight loss surgery and your insurance company says that your policy does not cover you when you first ask, don’t merely assume that their word is gospel. Go back to them again, preferably in writing, and make your case.

Every insurance company has its own way of doing things but, in general, you will need to satisfy your insurer that this is indeed a medical necessity in your particular case, that this is the only route open to you to solve your problem and that you understand and are able to cope with the marked lifestyle changes that result from gastric bypass surgery.

This means you will typically need to provide your insurer with:

1. A full medical history provided by your doctor giving his opinion that weight loss surgery is necessary. It will also help if this is backed up by the opinion of a specialist in the field of gastric bypass surgery.

2. Proof that you have attempted weight loss under medical supervision and without success in the period before your application. This period will vary between insurers but is commonly anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. You should note that this must be a weight loss program under the supervision of a physician and that programs such as those from Weight Watchers will not generally be accepted.

3. A psychological report indicating that you understand what is involved in weight loss surgery, including the considerable changes that it will make to your lifestyle, and that you are considered able to cope with the stress that this will involve.

Once you are able to meet these criteria, your insurance provider will generally be happy to meet the costs of gastric bypass surgery.

How to Stop Hair Loss Without Chemicals09.03.07

Peter Gregory asked:

Scalp Med is the newest product on the hair growth scene promising grand results for grand dollars. Hair loss is a common issue for several men and women; and although it is normal for one to lose 100 to 150 hairs a day, no one wants to. Unfortunately, when you compare “ScalpMed”, which is not FDA approved to Rogain and Propecia, there is no way of measuring which product works better. ScalpMed works for some individual however its chemical content has caused some individuals hair loss to become more pronounced or exacerbated. The most important thing to remember about Scalp Med is that whatever gains you receive as a result of using the product you will lose as soon as you stop using the product, which is similar to both Propecia and Rogain.

For these reasons, many people are opting to use all-natural hair growth products over their chemical counterparts. The most common cause of hair loss is a result of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which slows hair growth by binding to the hair root. Since this can be combated by using natural herbs without side effects, it only makes sense to try all-natural solutions first. The best company on the market that produces a power packed DHT inhibiting shampoo and conditioner is Beauty 4 Ashes Christian Co. Their A Double Portion ™ Super Gro System contains herbs and oils that combat DHT. Several studies have shown that Beauty 4 Ashes® A Double Portion™ Super Gro System, which contains Saw Palmeto, Ylang Ylang, Rosemary, Sage, Capsicum, Amla Oil, all ingredients which are found natural on earth, can produce comparable results to that of Propecia and Rogain without any side effects. The products in Beauty 4 Ashes’ Super Gro System include a shampoo, conditioner, Ayurvedic scalp gel, B-Vitamin super hair gro mist, and more. All of the system’s products contain either Saw Palmetto, Rosemary, Castor Oil or Sage and are packed with B vitamins, which lowers the levels of DHT in the body by blocking 5 alpha-reductase. You can find more about their products online at wwwdiscoverb4acom

The choice is yours. Just remember that the only guaranteed way to ensure success is an overpriced hair transplant. Thus, fight nature with nature and try an all natural solution before going the chemical route.

Exercise For Obesity?04.03.07

Steffen A.Hall asked:

We hear a lot about obesity these days and the usual solutions range from gastric bypass surgery to the inevitable plea for diet and exercise. However, there is one problem that people do not normally address with obesity, that is, what type of exercise can they do?

The problem? They couldn’t do the same kinds of exercises as other clients because of their size…the machines were too small for them and some exercises were just downright impossible. Together, we’ve come up with some solutions to these problems and, if you’re in the same boat, you can too.

Some of the main problems faced by obese people in the gym are:

1. Machines that are difficult to use or cause knee or back problems.

2. Swimming is a recommended exercise for obese people and this is wonderful if you have a pool in your backyard, but what if you don’t? Walking around in a bathing suit causes instant panic for plenty of people, but even moreso if you’re overweight or obese.

3. Recumbent bikes are another good option for obese people. The problem is, many aren’t built with big enough seats and climbing onto them can be a real challenge.

4. Walking. This is a simple exercise that can be done anywhere, right? Tell that to one of my clients who got food thrown at her from a moving car because of her size.

Do Obese People get more headaches?

If you have two unhealthy conditions, migraine and obesity, you are even more disabled than if you’d had either one. Past research has linked obesity to headache and migraine in adults. To investigate if such a connection exists in children and teens, Hershey and his colleagues looked at 440 migraine patients between the ages of 3 and 18 treated at seven specialty headache centers.

Permanent solution for obesity!

With all the problems associated with obesity, there is only one obvious method in which thousands of obese people has already tried, and succeeded, that is to go for a gastric bypass surgery. Gastric bypass surgery is extremely safe when conducted by a certified doctor and the tens of Kgs that you lose are permanent! Find out is gastric bypass surgery is for you!

Gastric Bypass - The Response To A Man-Made Problem11.11.06

Donald Saunders asked:

Obesity is as old as time itself and for many obesity is caused by medical or genetic problems. In today’s world, however, the alarming increase in the rate of obesity is very much a man-made problem, fired in part by the availability, and popularity, of the gastric bypass.

Advances in surgical techniques, not least the arrival of laparoscopic procedures, have made the gastric bypass a much simpler and more acceptable solution to the problem of obesity. What is more, the profile of the gastric bypass has been raised substantially in recent years helped in no small way by the number of celebrities choosing this method of weight loss.

The list of famous people following this route is long and includes the coach of the Notre Dame football team Charlie Weiss, the footballer Diego Maradona, the musician and harmonica virtuoso John Popper and the rock singer Randy Jackson to name just a few.

But why is obesity on the increase and is it truly a problem of our own making?

Despite the fact that there was a slight rise in the rate of obesity following world War II, the last twenty five years have seen a major growth in obesity, particularly in the USA. The precise reason for this is not known and there is fairly wide disagreement about the cause, but here are just a few reasons over which there is general agreement.

1. We are far less active as a society preferring to watch our favorite sport instead of getting out and playing the game ourselves and this is the majority of true amongst people who are overweight. perhaps more interestingly, if you lower the calorie intake for overweight people they do not become more active and if you raise the calorie intake for lean people they do not become less active. Weight loss, or gain, has little effect on a person’s level of activity, but that person’s level of activity does affect his weight.

2. Marketing today is highly sophisticated, if not subliminal, and this is particularly true in the world of fast and convenience foods. In addition, a large number of restrictions were removed for advertising made for children during the Reagan years and many of these restrictions covered such things as sweets and fast foods.

3. We are increasingly becoming a nation of two income households which means that people are now cooking far less at home. The number of people choosing home delivered meals, opting for fast food take out or frequenting their local restaurant has grown dramatically in recent years.

4. Trade subsidies negotiated during the past twenty five years have greatly cut the relative cost of food, not least that of sugar and sugar syrup. This in turn means that we now consume a lot more than we previously did.

5. Despite the present discussion over oil prices, the car is no longer considered a luxury and the two car family has become the norm. We do not think twice now about jumping into the car for even the shortest of journeys and many people wouldn’t even consider walking down to the shop at the end of the street.

6. Strangest of all perhaps is the effect that the craze for diet and exercise has had on the rise in obesity. We have become obsessed with dieting and many people diet as frequently as they change their clothes. Unfortunately it’s the case that most diets fail and, following a diet, it is common for your weight to rise to a level even higher than it was before you started. This pattern of falling and rising weight over time usually results in a steady underlying increase in weight towards obesity.

Each one of the factors mentioned here not only add to the growth in obesity but is also clearly made-made.

Now certainly gastric bypass provides one possible solution. However, even though the procedure is much simpler than it used to be and is gaining in popularity, it remains far from a pleasant experience and is not without its risks.

For those people who are obese today gastric bypass presents an excellent solution to their problem. For our children and grandchildren however perhaps the answer lies in preventing obesity rather than sitting back and waiting for the problem to arrive before resorting to gastric bypass surgery.

The Risks Of Gastric Lap Band Surgery05.14.06

Donald Saunders asked:

Weight loss surgery has advanced considerably in the past 50 years and modern forms of surgery such as gastric lap band surgery are certainly a lot safer and carry far fewer complications than early forms of open gastric bypass surgery. Nevertheless, there are risks and these should be fully discussed with your surgeon before embarking on surgery.

Gastric lap band surgery carries a number of risks which are specific to this form of surgery but it also carries the same risks that come will all major surgeries. In addition, there are a number of general risks which accompany any surgery involving patients who are overweight.

The first and most serious risk is that of death occurring either during surgery or shortly after and directly related to surgery. At this early stage (gastric lap band surgery has been around for some 12 years now but has only been licensed for use in the United States since 2001) very few deaths have been reported and it is difficult to give a figure, although it is generally held that the risk of death from gastric lap band surgery is less than 1%.

It is interesting to note that in one study in Australia no deaths at all were reported amongst a group of 2700 patients who have undergone laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery since 1994. It should be said however that Australia has been in the forefront of pioneering the use of the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band and that over 90% of all weight loss surgeries conducted in Australia now use this method. This is significant as, in interpreting data from this study, it should be borne in mind that the experience of the surgeon is a very significant factor in terms of both risk and complication. Surgeons with considerable experience of this technique (having performed at least 100 procedures) show a very much higher success rate.

Many of the risks during surgery are general rather than “lap band” specific and are common surgical risks associated with such things as your age, weight, reaction to anesthesia and the presence of disease (whether or not this is directly related to your weight problem). The main “lap band” specific risk during surgery is that of gastric perforation (a tear in the wall of the stomach) which occurs in about 1% of cases.

The vast majority of complications will occur following gastric lap band surgery and most patients (in one US study the figure was as high as 88%) will experience some form of complication in the weeks and months following surgery. Such complications will not necessarily be serious and will range from mild to severe.

Approximately half of all patients will suffer varying degrees of nausea and vomiting and in the region of one-third of patients will also suffer from regurgitation (gastroesophageal reflux). About a quarter of patients will experience a slippage of the band and about one patient in seven will experience a blockage of the passage between the two sections of the stomach.

Other moderate to severe problems following gastric lap band surgery can include erosion of the band into the stomach and twisting or leakage of the access port. Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia), constipation and diarrhea are also quite common.

In a very small number of patients (less than 1%) a whole series of non-series complications may arise including (but not limited to) inflammation of the stomach (gastritis), migration of the stomach above the diaphragm (hiatal hernia), inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), dehydration, abdominal pain, gas (flatulence), chest pain and infection.

In general gastric lap band surgery, particularly when performed laparoscopically, carries fewer risks and complications than other forms of weight loss surgery, but these risks are nonetheless significant and should be fully discussed with your surgeon and understood before any decision is taken to undergo surgery.

What You Should Eat If You Have Hypertension03.19.06

Jason Rickard asked:

Hypertension, also referred to as high blood pressure, is a common ailment in adults. Stress, improper diet and lack of exercise are some of the causes of hypertension. Dietetic management plays an integral role in helping people with hypertension stay as healthy as they can. What you eat is basically who you are and good food contains nutrients that your body needs to function normally.

Hypertension is also associated to people who are overweight. In this case, intake of high-calorie food should be minimized. For people with average weight, it is best the check a daily-recommended calorie diet that is best suitable for your age, gender and lifestyle.

Eating protein-rich foods like meat and chicken should also be restricted. People with hypertension should have 20 grams per day at a maximum. It can also be calculated as 1 gram per 1 kilogram of one’s body weight. To give a more concrete example, if for instance your weight is 70 kilograms then 70 grams of protein would be enough for one day.

Animal fats are also a no-no. Eat fatty foods pose a greater risk for people with hypertension. An increase intake of fatty foods can even lead to arteriosclerosis but not all fats are bad. You may be allowed to eat foods containing vegetable oils but not oily foods like liver or egg yolk.

One way to lower down blood pressure is to have a low fat and low sodium diet. Two to three grams of sodium would be enough per day. Keeping your potassium level high would also improve your condition. Good sources of potassium include celery, watermelon, tomatoes, bananas and other leafy vegetables. Get enough fluids everyday. If you have hypertension and oedema at the same time, then that’s the only time you need to limit your water intake.

Remember that you should always have a healthy lifestyle to combat hypertension. Manage your hypertension diet by quickly writing down your meal plan on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Smoking and drinking alcohol should never be in the list of the things you should do. With enough vigilance with the food you eat, in no time you can ease away from hypertension and live a better and healthier life.

Laparoscopic Surgery - The Adjustable Gastric Band03.11.05

Donald Saunders asked:

Gastric banding is a relatively new form of weight loss surgery first pioneered in Sweden in 1985 with the band being designed initially to be fitted using open surgery. The first laparoscopic surgery for the insertion of a gastric band was performed in France in 2000 and a year later in 2001 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of an American adjustable gastric banding system for use in the United States. Since then gastric banding has grown rapidly in popularity.

The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band is a form of restrictive gastric bypass surgery which many surgeons are beginning to favor as it avoids many of the nutritional problems associated with malabsorption surgeries. It also involves no cutting or stapling of the stomach and this, combined with the fact that the procedure can be performed laparoscopically, means that the death rate from surgery is about one-tenth of that seen in the widely used open Roux-en-Y form of surgery.

From the patient’s point of view the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band means a relatively short stay in hospital and a quick recovery. Once in place the band can also be adjusted without further surgery so that the surgeon has much greater control of patient management in the critical weeks following surgery, making it possible to react quickly and easily to problems which the patient might experience.

The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band procedure is also fully reversible and, after removal of the band, the stomach will return to its normal pre-operative state.

As with most restrictive forms of surgery weight loss tends to be less dramatic than in malabsorption or combination surgeries and patients have to work a little bit harder in the early months following surgery to achieve a satisfactory rate of weight loss. However, because weight loss is not quite so easy and patients have to learn a strict set of eating habits, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery tends to produce better long-term results and weight stability.

It is interesting to note that in Australia the vast majority of weight loss surgeries (over 90%) now involve the use of the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band. It is also significant that in one reported Australian study involving 2700 morbidly obese patients who underwent laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery not one single death has been reported which can be directly attributed to the surgery. This compares with Roux-en-Y surgery where, in a group of the same size, the average expected number of deaths would be in the region of 13 patients.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery, like any other form of surgery, is not without its risks and complications and it would incorrect to conclude from this brief introduction to the procedure that it is a simple and routine procedure. Indeed, it is far from an easy option. Nevertheless, in comparison to the other forms of weight loss surgery available, it does represent an attractive option for many people who are contemplating surgery.

Celebrities And Plastic Surgery07.20.03

Kadence Buchanan asked:

A lot of people are tempted to undergo plastic surgery but are afraid of what it could do to them if things go wrong. Perhaps taking a good look at the celebrities who have failed at their attempts at plastic surgery can show these people that they should be very afraid indeed. Here’s a short list of celebrities who have undergone horrible plastic suregry, based on various published reports in publications and on the internet.

1. Michael Jackson

yes, he tops the list of worst plastic surgery cases. Following a series of surgical procedures, Jackson probably now ranks as one of the scariest celebrities on the planet. He used to be a cute black child but now he resembles a pale ghost. You don’t have to say a lot about Jackson and this topic because practically everyone has seen the dire results.

2. Melanie Griffith

She was once a stunning and fresh-faced beauty, particularly during the eighties, but now that she has put too much collagen on her face, her skins looks much too tight as if she’s always tense. Why, some people say she can’t even smile anymore. The best she can do is grimace. Of course, there are whispers that drugs have something to do with it as well.

3. Farrah Fawcett

Another former knockout whose looks have taken a turn for the worse after plastic surgery is Farrah Fawcett. She was once the queen of the hit series Charlie’s Angels and one of the most popular poster girls in the world. Today, after a series of nips and tucks and many more, her face looks deformed, with a nose that is lopsided and eyes that are way too tilted at the ends.

4. Lil Kim

Black musician Lil Kim seems to be following the footsteps of Michael Jackson. She’s tried to be a little whiter and she’s altered her eyes, nose and lips. She once looked soulful and sultry. Now she looks like a gremlin.

5. Kylie Minogue

Kylie used to ooze sex appeal.

Now, after too many botox treatments, her face looks as tight as a drum. Sure, you don’t see any wrinkles on her forehead at all, but her face looks too stiff and unnatural.
