Many celebrities today have chosen to use their high status as a means to raise awareness about different social and political issues that are close to their hearts. One such celebrity is Greg Grunberg, who portrays police officer Matt Parkman on NBC’s hit television series, Heroes.

Grunberg, whose popularity grew due to his work on the television drama series, Felicity, has decided to become a hero in and out of the small screen by leading the Epilepsy Foundation walk, which was held late last March. He chose to take part in the event mainly because his own child, Jake, is one of the many people around the world who have been stricken with the difficult condition. However, Grunberg has said that Jake is more than capable of engaging in regular activities and, more notably, has taken a more active role in educating others about the truth behind his condition.

Epilepsy, or what is also sometimes known as a seizure disorder, is a neurological condition that is made most problematic by the series of random epileptic seizures. Studies have shown that around 50 million people from all over the world are affected by epilepsy. Although the condition is incurable, it can be controlled with the help of medication, and sometimes even surgery.

Aside from his involvement in the Epilepsy Foundation Walk, Grunberg has also tried to raise money for the Pediatric Epilepsy Project (PEP) by selling works of art accomplished by his fellow Heroes cast members. Grunberg is the organization’s celebrity sponsor and was the host of the online art auction, which featured the self-portraits of the different Heroes characters. As can be seen on the PEP’s official website, the organization “was formed with a single, all-important mission: to raise funds, provide financial support and increase community awareness to help sustain the Division of Pediatric Neurology at UCLA.”

Last February Helen wanted to entertain her crowd. After considerable thought she decided on a Washington tea party. That type of party offered many and varied ideas for decorating and entertainment. Then too her school had a holiday on the 22nd of February which made it a perfect day for a party. She printed her invitation on small cardboard hatchets which she cut from heavy construction paper.

They read: Come over on Thursday At three P.M. to help Cut down the Cherry tree. Helen. Naturally her guests were much intrigued. They speculated as to whether or not they were supposed to really cut down a cherry tree. However, when the guests arrived they learned that this was an entirely different cherry tree from the one George Washington had chopped down.

The cherry tree turned out to be a good-sized branch of barberry which of course at this time of year was bare. A flower holder in the bottom of an old-fashioned jardiniere held it upright. To keep it from tipping sidewise the jardiniere was filled with clean white sand.

The leaves and cherries on this tree were cut from construction paper and fastened to the tree by placing them on the tiny barberry thorns. The tree was very attractive and held a prominent place in the center of the living room.

But this tree was more than decoration it started off the fun. Each girl was directed to take her turn in choosing a leaf from the tree. When the first girl had made her choice she discovered written on the back of her leaf an easy historical question such as “Name two famous men who had birthdays in February.” If she could answer the question correctly she had a second choice. If she preferred to choose a cherry she could do so. But here was the joker. Some of the cherries were blank on the back, others bore this sentence, “I did it with my little hatchet.” If her cherry was a blank she could then draw another leaf. But if her cherry had a sentence on the back she was required to do a stunt for the crowd sing a song, turn a handspring, tell a story, or what have you. She could make her own choice.’

In this game the winner was the gal who had answered correctly the greatest number of historical questions. It was her privilege to impose forfeits in the way of stunts on the rest of the girls.

Weeks after his unceremonious dismissal from Grey’s Anatomy, embattled actor, Isaiah Washington is considering filing a lawsuit.

The furor over the Isaiah Washington-T.R. Knight gay slur issue has dragged on for months but the truth behind what really transpired is a matter of he said, he said until now. According to Knight, who appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in January, “everyone [on the set] heard [the gay slur].” Knight was referring to an on-set disagreement between Washington and Grey’s lead star, Patrick Dempsey, during which Washington reportedly used an anti-gay term in reference to Knight.

Washington has repeatedly disputed Knight’s account of the events. He insists that Knight’s version is not how things happened. “That’s a lie. I used the word during a disagreement with Patrick. I apologized for that. We shook hands and went back to work,” Washington said. “I knew T.R. was gay, but I would never attack him because of his sexual orientation. That’s stupid. I’ve been working with lesbians and gays for 21 years in this business.”

Washington further claimed that Knight had used the gay slur incident to his own purposes and milked the issue to gain some sympathy for his own ends. Washington added that Knight had been hoping for a more substantial role for his character, Dr. George O’Malley, and a corresponding pay hike to go with it. “I feel all of this was about him getting a raise and getting his character to stop being perceived as a dopey, kooky kind of character,” Washington candidly revealed. “He perceives himself as a leading man. That’s why you could see the change this past season. That was his whole impetus behind this. And I was used and I was exploited…to raise T.R.’s profile. I may be wrong, but that’s how I feel about it.”

Washington said in an interview with the Houston Chronicle that “they fired the wrong guy.” He said that T.R. Knight should have been canned for having created a negative working environment and stirring up the notion that the slur was targeted at him. In what he perceived as a calculated move by his co-star, Washington said he was contemplating taking legal action to clear his name and reputation. “My livelihood, my honor and dignity and my name have been so challenged,” Washington concluded.
