Anorexia Eating Disorder Causes Death to Brazilian Model06.19.09

Sandra Kim Leong asked:

It seems to be coincidental. On the same day of the movie debut of Thin about eating disorders, Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston passed away from complications resulting from anorexia. She was only 21 years old and had represented for top modelling agencies such as Ford. However, at the time of her death, she was severely under nourished. Apparently, she had lived on apples and tomatoes prior to her hospitalization in October. Despite being 1.72m tall, she weighed less than 40 kilos.

Her death drew much attention about the negative consequences from having an anorexia eating disorder. Even Wikipedia, the premier online encyclopedia, has a listing about her. She was not the first person to have died this year from an eating disorder and who caught the attention of the media. Luisel Ramos, 22 had a heart attack in August after surviving on lettuce leaves and Diet Coke for three months.

Ana Carolina had refused help for a long time as she believed that she was not ill. Nevertheless, it was obvious to all around her that she had an eating disorder and was starving herself. She ate very little at meal times but would purge immediately after her meal by throwing up. This behaviour as described is very typical of someone with an anorexia eating disorder. In most cases, an anorexic would refuse treatment until the condition is fairly serious. Some even do not seek treatment at all.

The mother of Ana Carolina wasted no time in spreading the message that no money earned through a lucrative modelling career can be worth the life of a child. She was extremely devastated by the loss of her beautiful daugther.

Ana Carolina had died at a time amidst growing concerns about how designers are promoting the wrong ideas of a body image. Designers had started the use of size zero models who were clearly anorexic.

More fashion spots, including London, are taking notice now due the string of events relating to eating disorders. In September, Madrid refused to allow all models with a body-mass-index (BMI) of less than 18, to be in shows. The World Health Organization considers anyone with a BMI below of 18.5 to be underweight.

The media, including all fashion houses and venues, should have a responsibility in the ideas that they promote. Using anorexic models sends the wrong signals to millions of young girls and women around the world. Anorexia is an eating disorder that needs to be treated as there are strong pyscological concerns. Defining beauty to look as if one is malnourished and anorexic is in poor taste. Women should look healthy and glowing.

Washington DC: A Vibrant and Fascinating Capital04.17.04

Mark asked:

Washington, DC is established by the Constitution of the United States to serve as the nation’s capital. Named after the first American President, George Washington, the capital is steeped in history, which is captured in its monuments, museums and memorials.

For over 200 years, the White House has been the home of the President and their families and is often referred to as the most famous address in the country. Now home to the first African-American President, Barak Obama, power and politics continue to be an exhilarating mix.

The city was designed by Pierre Charles L’Enfant, inspired by chic Paris, who created grand boulevards and ceremonial spaces. It has since transformed into a vibrant and fascinating capital renowned for its urban spaces, extensive memorials and grand neoclassical architecture.

The city’s most famous landmarks are in and around the National Mall, spanning from the Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capitol. The city hosts many festivals, gatherings and performances. On summer evenings, the Mall is a great place to catch an open air concert, movie screening or jazz performance. In the winter, the popular outdoor ice skating rink opens at the National Gallery of Art, overlooking the numerous art sculptures and gardens.

Getting around DC

Washington’s location makes it easy to get to via car, train, bus and plane. Once in DC, navigating around the city is simple, due to its compact nature and grid-patterned layout.

Driving around the crowded streets of DC can be a strain and parking can be even worse. Luckily the city has a great public transportation system. The Metro is an efficient and comfortable system, consisting of rail and buses, which operates throughout the city. The fare you pay depends on the zone(s) you travel in and a flat fee is in operation on the bus system.

The DC Circulator is a new and convenient way to get around town; US$1 takes you from Union Station to Georgetown or to the National Mall.

Taxis are abundant and the capital has one of the highest ratios of taxis per person. Currently, taxis work in a zone system, whereby customers pay depending on the zones they use. Don’t miss…

Washington is a culinary adventure with just about every type of cuisine imaginable, from Burmese to Ethiopian to American. Here are some of the most popular eateries:

Citronelles

3000 M St. NW

Tel: 202-625-2150

Website:http://www.citronelledc.com

An elegant (and very expensive) restaurant that is one of DC’s most acclaimed. French Chef Michel Richard creates a gastronomic dining experience, with an inventive menu. Favorite dishes include: Abalone served sashimi style; sablefish with miso glaze; short ribs for two, the meat de-boned and cooked sous-vide for 72 hours, then finished in a searing-hot pan and presented medium rare.

Meskerem

2434 18th St NW

Tel: (202) 462-4100

There are numerous budget Ethiopian eateries along the streets of Adams Morgan, but none as pleasing as this one. Diners can sit at messobs (basket tables) on low, carved Ethiopian chairs and tear off little pieces of injera (sour-dough pancakes) with which they can sample a wide range of chicken, lamb and vegetable stews. Don’t forget to taste the homemade honey wine.

Ben’s Chili Bowl

1213 U Street, NW

Tel: (202) 667 0909

Website: http://www.benschilibowl.com

‘Home of the Famous Chili Dog’, give’s a clue as to what to order at this eatery, which has been around since 1958. The chili half-smoke was voted Washington’s signature dish. Ben’s Chili Bowl has a diner style décor, with Formica counters lined with red vinyl barstools. The diner is known to be frequented by celebrities such as comedian Bill Cosby and has even been recently sampled by President Obama.

The Rumbling Lure of the Waterfalls of Wayanad08.26.02

Sumi Krishnan asked:

Kerala’s charming natural beauty has lured nature lovers from across the globe. Wayanad district in northern Kerala has been specially blessed. The scintillating beauty of Wayanad with its undulating hills decked in green, unmolested by the menace of mass tourism and brimming with a wide range of flora and fauna is truly appealing to any lover of Nature. The beauty of the place is accentuated by countless waterfalls that thunder down rocky clefts, shimmering in the sunlight and ending in a glorious spray that creates a nebulous aura around them.

Meenmutty, Soochipara, Kanthanpara and Chethalayam are some of the better known waterfalls of Wayanad. Each sparkling cataract goes through an exciting journey before tumbling down from rocky massifs with a reverberating roar. Originating from their fountains in the spice laden mountains of Wayanad, the streams meander garrulously through dense greenery, emerging for a brief, glittering plunge through the air before disappearing once again under thick foliage cover.

Meenmutty is the biggest of the waterfalls in Wayanad district both in terms of volume and height. The water cascades down in three stages from a height of about 300 meters. Meenmutty lies off the main road to Ooty, another popular hill resort in south India. It takes an arduous trek of two kilometers to reach the falls. Reaching the three different stages takes even more strenuous effort, but once you get there you’ll find it was well worth the effort. Meenmutty is 29kms from Kalpetta and 28kms from Sultan Bathery.

Soochipara is another three-tiered waterfall and is located at Meppadi, about 20kms from Kalpetta. The water here plummets down from a height of about 200 meters. Shallow pools below the fall allow ample scope for you to wallow in the cool waters. Though relatively smaller, Kanthanpara Falls is easily reachable, and makes an ideal picnic spot. It lies at a distance of 22kms from Kalpetta, 23kms from Sultan Bathery and 57kms from Mananthavady. The Chethalayam Falls is lesser known than the others. It is located 12kms away from Sultan Bathery on the Pulpalli Main Road, and takes 4kms of trekking to get there. If waterfalls are the things that thrill you, then Wayanad is your place.
